The Irish Cancer Society
This weekend I will be undertaking my first ultra-marathon in the hopes of raising money for the Irish Cancer Society. The race is called Barry and John's Dublin Mountain Backyard Ultra. For those unfamiliar with the Backyard concept, the race consists of a 6.706km circuit with 250 meters of elevation. It is a last man standing format which requires runners to run the loop every hour, on the hour. The race lasts until one contestant remains and completes a solo lap. For a frame of reference, last year's winner ran for 29 hours or a distance of 194.4kms. I have no experience of this race format or pushing myself to go for these lengths of time and distance. However, I can guarantee I will push myself ridiculously hard and I will have to get injured or be falling asleep running to quit. I hope at a minimum to run 100kms which equates to 15 loops or 15 hours.
This is an excellent opportunity for me to test my limits whilst raising money for an extremely worthwhile charity. It is a cause that is simultaneously near to my heart and something that has affected most people.
