Team Jason STRONG

Normal...typical, average every day... None of those things describe Jason. Jason is nothing short of amazing. Even with that, Jason could still use a little help from some family and friends.

Things were normal, typical, average every day until the week of August 12, 2013 when a routine medical appointment turned into every parent's worst nightmare. Jason was exhibiting pressure behind his eye, and the initial thought was due to sinus related issues. A CT scan cleared up that thought very quickly. Jason had a monster in his body, a tumor, growing behind his eye resulting in pressure and causing it to bulge. Immediate steps were taken to find out what exactly this monster was and what steps would need to be taken to destroy it.

As devastating as that new was...that was just the beginning. After what seemed like a million medical tests and a life time of waiting, the results came in... On August, 18, 2013, Jason was diagnosed with Leukemia, specifically acute myeloid leukemia (AML). And if that wasn't enough, a further CT scan showed that not only did Jason have the chloroma (tumor) in his sinus, he also had multiple chloromas in his lungs, stomach, liver, and intestinal messintary.

Since that time, Jason has had a bone marrow biopsy, multiple lumbar punctures and his central line placed so that he could begin receiving his chemotherapy treatments. A subtyping of Jason's AML was done and he is considered a medium risk case. As I write this, Jason has made it through his first round of chemo (10 days of treatment!) and is working on allowing his immune system to rebuild before taking a very short break before beginning the next round.

Jason is 14 months old. He is the son of my sister Nikki, and her husband Pat. Jason also has a four year old sister Katherine, who absolutely loves and adores Jason. She calls him her baby. The Kenyon family lives Columbus, GA.


Obviously, no one ever plans for this type of medical circumstance, and no parent should ever have to watch their child struggle through such a situation. And of course, despite having medical insurance, cancer can devastate a family in more ways than one, especially financially. Did you know that one round of chemotherapy could cost up to $150,000? And to think at this time, Jason's current treatment plan has him going through 4-6 rounds. And then there are the every day living expense that all of us have, food, utilities, education, gas, etc.

Jason's parents remain strong and focused on his treatment and recovery. Jason's mommy, Nikki, is staying with him full time at the hospital. Being anywhere but there with Jason is out of the question at this point. Jason's daddy, Pat, works full time during the week, he and Jason's sister, Katherine, drive every weekend from Columbus to Atlanta to spend the weekend as a family, trying to provide any sort of normalcy to their children during this time.





There are a zillion and one good causes out there that you can contribute to, volunteer your time to, and support. And I know economically, many of us are in situations that are cause for concern ourselves. But I'm asking you, please consider donating something, anything to this amazing little boy and his family. We all have some extra change lying around, or could give up that fast food drive through lunch one time this week, or skip that cup of coffee that we usually grab at the local gas station or Dunkin Donuts on your way into work. Every penny you can donate can mean a world of change in this little boys life as he goes through a greater struggle than many of us will ever have to go through.
