26 yr old Northboro native battling ALS
A few months ago, Matt Bruce woke up and noticed that it was difficult for him to speak without slurring his words. He didn't see a doctor right away. He figured it would go back to normal, but it did not.
Matt Bruce was recently diagnosed with ALS - amyotrophic lateral sclerosis "“ Lou Gehrig's Disease. ALS is an incurable disease that progressively degenerates motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, eventually leading to death. ALS recently claimed the life of former governor Paul Cellucci of Hudson. Matt has always been healthy, he loves the outdoors, fishing, and sports. Matt celebrated his 26th birthday in July.
Bruce said though the diagnosis is devastating, he hasn't once asked, "Why me?" Instead, he is focused on raising awareness of the disease as well as cherishing time with family and friends. "I just want to enjoy each day I have," he said. In addition to the slurred speech, Matt has experienced rapid weight loss.
A 2005 graduate of Algonquin Regional High School, Bruce who has lived in Westboro and now resides in Worcester with 2 high school friends. Matt is the oldest of 3 children, his parents James Bruce "“ a sergeant with the Northborough Police Department and mother Natalie Bruce remain positive and strong taking it one day at a time and rely on their faith to get them through each day.
