Saving Jasper the Goffin Cockatoo

Meet Jasper the 15 year old Goffin cockatoo. As you can see in the picture Jasper is in rough shape. Jasper is a self mutilator. Much like people, birds go through emotional times and often don't cope in the best of ways. At a previous owners home Jasper went through an emotional life change causing him to pluck his feathers and mutilate his skin. Jasper has opened himself up all the way down to the bone and removed part of his keal bone. He came in to the vet office that I work at as an assistant and I knew that I couldn't let anyone give up on poor Jasper. Jasper is now under my care but will need to see Avian specialists and possibly surgeons to heal from this traumatic injury. Many people have told me that I am better off euthanizing Jasper, however if you think about it, this creature had the strength to tear into itself and remove bone... and live to tell the tale! There could not be a clearer indication of Jasper's will to live. Any tiny bit helps as we start this journey. Thank you all so much for taking the time to read Jasper's Story!
