On March 11th Jude was taken to the ER for a severe headache with devastating results... a Medulloblastoma which is a cancerous brain tumor that starts in the lower back part of the brain. Emergency surgery was scheduled for the next day and he remained at St. Joe's for a week. This all happened at the beginning of the COVID19 quarantine which meant any upcoming appointments, hospital stays or treatments would be limited to only Dina & Dave by his side.
Since that first surgery Jude has had two more operations to add a port and shunt from his head to his tummy. The plan put into place by the wonderful team in Orlando includes Proton Radiation and a very aggressive chemo. He will continue to have hospital visits, MRI's, various medications and more, all while quarantined from the family and friends he loves.
To make things harder on the family, Dina and Jude have moved to Orlando to be closer to the hospital and doctors that are fighting to save his life. The younger girls will also stay in Orlando under quarantine so that Dina can continue to home-school in between treatments and hospital stays. Dave will remain in Tampa because of work, and there will be limited contact with the eldest three.
As you can imagine, this has been a huge change for this close, loving family of 8. The family has catastrophic insurance only, which does not cover everything and comes with a yearly upfront deductible of $10,000. The family has received an outpouring of support including gifts for Jude, a food chain (while in Tampa) and a grant that will pay for the apartment in Orlando but unfortunately this is not enough. Running two households, schooling, food, gas, medications, etc., have started to add up. They have also been advised that this is a 5 year fight for Jude; a fight that will take all he has to beat this horrid cancer. It is already taking a severe toll on Jude and the family and the last thing they need to worry about is how they are going to make ends meet.
To help relieve some of the burden we are asking for donations. This would cover the deductibles for the next couple of years and help with remaining hospital & treatment costs, food and gas. We know that Dina, Dave & Family are involved with several local groups including the homeschool PE classes at Bob Sierra YMCA, OLORCHA homeschool group, JMJ homeschool group and a parishioner and cathechist at St Pauls Catholic church. Dina & the family are always willing to lend a hand where ever needed but now they need you. I hope you will make a donation, even the smallest is appreciated. If we all come together we can make a tremendous difference in the lives of this family and allow them to focus on Jude's recovery.
