You have no idea how much I don't want to have to ask for help.
But you may have an idea of how much I will do to help my husband battle this horrific disease. I will do anything I can to make things easier on him.
As most of you know, my husband Scott was diagnosed with ALS in 2010. ALS is a terminal illness with a 2-5 year life expectancy. During those years you have left, you slowly become paralyzed, and eventually lose your ability to breathe on your own. Scott has been such a fighter these three years since diagnosis. He gets stronger every day, even though his physical body gets weaker. He 's an inspiration to all of us!!
Sadly, Scott has lost most of his ability to get out and about without using a power wheelchair to help him. We have been blessed with an amazing power wheelchair given to us by a woman who lost her husband to ALS a few years ago. Scott's father has successfully moved the controls from the hand to the foot, so that Scott has the freedom to move himself around using his big toe!! This has opened up so much opportunity for him to be able to get outside and move around inside without assistance.
We also were given a lift to attach to my car that can transport the wheelchair. We were so excited to be able to go and do things together again after spending an entire winter basically home bound. Once we loaded everything on the car though, we noticed a big problem. Our car cannot handle the weight of the lift and trailer, and after further research we learned that using this set up will actually twist our car frame and ruin it. We were pretty crushed.
A wheelchair van is a logical option, but at 30k, there is no way we can afford that.
Then a sweet friend who is also an ALS caregiver, told us about a trailer that she uses to transport her husband's wheel chair. It is called a Scoota Trailer . After looking into it and researching it, this is the perfect solution for us!
The problem is, this set up costs $4000. Much cheaper than a wheelchair van, but still out of our reach. (why is everything medical SO expensive anyway??)
After much thought and prayer, I decided to reach out to our community and see if we can come together and make this possible for Scott to have. It would mean so much to our family to be able to enjoy going out together and continuing to make special memories. We know time is short, and each day we are still given is a special gift that we want to make the most of.
I have set up this site so that if you feel led to give towards this trailer fund, it's an easy way to do so.
