Memorial For Charlotte Criger

In April, the Ayer Elementary family suffered the loss of second grader Charlotte Criger. As students and staff have worked through their grief, a desire to remember Charlotte and honor her life in a permanent way at Ayer has developed.
After much brainstorming and discussion between students, staff and the Criger family, a decision was made to plant a pink dogwood tree outside the second grade classrooms. Students have been working hard this week to paint river rocks to ring the edge of the tree's mulch bed. A limestone memorial stone will be added.
In January, Mrs. Holt asked her second graders, "How will you show kindness today?" Charlotte's response was, "play with pepople that do not have anywon to play with."
In the spirit of her inclusion and kindness, students suggested a Buddy Bench- if a child is sitting on it alone, it is a signal to the other kids to ask him or her to play. For a kid with no one to play with, there may be no lonelier place than the school playground. And kids with an established group of friends may not think to seek out those who feel excluded. It’s also common for children to go off by themselves when they’re feeling sad, and what they really need is for someone to notice. The benches give children a safe, nonjudgmental place to retreat. Once a child is asked off the bench to come play, the hope is that they’ll have the confidence to go play with their new friends again the next day.
Since Charlotte's passing, many have asked what they can do to help. This GoFundMe campaign will cover the costs of the tree, planting, landscaping, river rocks, paint, memorial stone, metal bench, memorial plaque, freight, bench installation, tulip bulbs and bird feeders. All funds raised will be spent directly to honor Charlotte. Thank you, in advance, for any and all support you provide our students, staff and community.
