Miniature Horses Need Urgent Care

Tax deductible
On March 11, 2018, the Thurston County Sheriff's Office impounded over 250 animals for abuse and neglect. Removed from the property and placed in foster homes were 23 miniature horses (including some mares who might be pregnant), one male goat, one female goat with two babies, and one baby goat that had no mother.

One of the volunteers who was on site during the removal of these animals described the living conditions as "hell on earth"; also on site were the bodies of dead horses and other animals. This volunteer, who had worked for a local animal shelter for years and seen multiple cases of animal neglect, said it was the worst case of animal abuse and neglect they had ever seen.

The money raised through this GoFundMe campaign will be used by Hooved Animal Rescue of Thurston County (HAROTC) for all the costs needed to assess and treat these animals, who are currently in the foster homes. This will include extensive laboratory analysis from blood and fecal samples to look for disease and parasites. Before any rehabilitative foot care can be done, x-rays will be taken on the animals with overgrown hooves to determine the extent of any damage to the bones in the hoof area (it was estimated the miniature horses hadn't had their feet trimmed in up to four years). Because of the long term neglect, extensive dental work will also need to be done on all the horses. In addition, the money will be spent on food, bedding, and vaccinations.

At the time of impound, all of these animals were covered in feces and mud, as well as having heavy infestations of lice. Grooming alone has taken hours. No volunteer will receive any money for their time in taking care of these animals.

In order to alleviate the pain and suffering of these animals, medical work, especially foot and dental care, needs to be done immediately.

All the volunteers will be extremely thankful for your help, but the ones who will really be thankful are the animals.

With thanks,

Maggie
