Lucinda Smith was hospitalized with Type A and B flu, double severe pneumonia (despite the fact she was vaccinated for the flu and pneumonia) and suffered a mild heart attack on March 30th. Despite the ICU's efforts to improve her condition, her lungs stiffened up and resulted in a condition called acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). She is severely in stage 3, the final stage, of ARDS.
The primary goal at this time is to wean her off the ventilator. This process can take 4-6 months. After being weaned off, she will be in need of therapy for up to 2 years. We are also looking into clinical trials for specialized treatments. She will require a generous amount of medical attention/supervision, specialized equipment and long term care.
Our family is doing everything we can to ensure she not only survives but has a great quality of life. We never imagined Lucinda becoming a part of a medical nightmare. We want to thank you all for the prayers, love and support during this devastating time so she continues her fight.
