Hello, my name is Lesia Szewczyk. This was my first time I have traveled to the Islands of Hawaii. A few days ago on Easter Day, while on the Big Island of Hawaii, we found a dog on the side of the road in a remote location. She was left in the extreme heat, injured, hungry, and very dehydrated. Her injuries consist of a broken front leg and a few cuts (You can see this in the pictures). Immediately after we found her we contacted the emergency number for the Humane Society of Kona. We decided to comfort the dog to the best of our capability. We approached her with great caution not knowing how she might react. At first she was a bit frightened and she tried to get up and limp off but she was in pain so she stayed put. As we got closer she seemed to be less frightened and licked our hands and wagged her tail. From then on we knew she was very friendly and appreciated the comfort. We fed her some bread we had in the car and gave her water to drink. Since it was so hot we decided it would be important to keep her out of the heat as much as possible, so we grabbed a towel out of the car and stood and sat with her and shaded her. In my time of meeting dogs through life, she has been one of the friendliest and most loving dogs I have ever met. I felt a great connection between her and I so I decided that I need to have her as my companion . Since I do not live in Hawaii this would be a difficult and costly task getting her to New Jersey. There are also concerns of her injuries paired with such a short amount of time before my flight home. Lei-Lei's leg will definitely need a splint for her journey to New Jersey and surgery when she gets home. This is estimated to cost around $1,000. Her traveling over seas on the plane is estimated to cost around $500. Please help her to get home. Anything you are able to contribute to this cause would be very appreciated.
