Our brilliant friend Heather has had severe and complex health issues over the past 8 months. These issues are ongoing and she needs our help.
8 months ago, Heather woke up blind in one eye and has since been on a rollercoaster of symptoms, diagnoses and hospital visits. She hasn’t been able to work due to losing her vision, the intense migraines she suffered and the side effects of having to take so many different medications while doctors try to work out what is wrong. Along side this, Heather has had to contend with multiple trips to and from Darwin hospital, 650km away. Heather lives in a small remote community in the Northern Territory and although the local hospital has been great with providing the care that they can, there has been long periods of time where she has had to travel away to receive the care she needs. Being away from family and friends while dealing with such the ramifications of such ill health has had a huge impact on her financially and mentally.
This long, complicated ordeal has seen Heather diagnosed multiple times, as doctors haven’t seen anything like this before. She has experienced symptoms such as loss of vision, double vision, crippling head aches and body pain that affect simple everyday tasks. She has had to contend with possible brain tumours and the fear of rare brain conditions along with being tested for cancer. While initially diagnosed with Tolosa Hunt Syndrome, a rare inflammation disorder characterized by severe head aches and eye muscle paralysis, she has since been tentatively diagnosed with Neurosarcoidosis, an inflammatory disease that causes inflamed cell growth all over the body and inflammation on the base of the brain. However, Heather still has a tough journey ahead of her awaiting an official diagnosis that can result in her being medicated and treated appropriately.
The past 8 months have definitely been hard for her but she has showed so much strength and positivity and we are all so proud of how she has handled it. As of now she has been sent back to her home in Arnhem Land but due to the uncertainty of her condition she is still unable to work and as such, has a long road ahead of her.
We, as her friends are asking for any donations big or small to help Heather along this journey back to her healthy self. Heather has always been a team player, who goes out of her way to show kindness to others and contribute to her community. She is so loved, and we want to show her the same generosity that she consistently shows to everyone around her. The donations will go towards Heather’s ongoing recovery, medical costs and further care and will be very much appreciated!
