This is sort of like that. I don't want to live off this, but your buck ($1.00, that is) will certainly help through a rough spot.
I normally take responsibility to pay my own way, but I am facing a new situation and have realized that I should "think outside the box" (excuse the tired phrase, please).
A few years ago the Air conditioner in my 2005 Hyundai stopped working. When I got the estimate to repair it (over $1200 at that time), I had to think long and hard about whether to have it repaired. I was unemployed at the time and our total income just did not justify spending the money. I decided I could stand the heat just fine for that kind or money.
Since then, a period of over four years, I have worked for San Diego Habitat for Humanity for about fifteen months and others for another four or so. Otherwise, like so many others out there, it's been tough finding my next opportunity. Through it all, I rolled down the windows and enjoyed my 4/55 AC (four windows down at 55 MPH), waiting for the time when I had stable employment and could afford to get it repaired.
Now comes a new challenge.
About three years ago I was diagnosed with colon cancer. The surgery was successful in removing all evidence of cancer. I had radiation treatment and a round of light chemo. Tests after all that showed no cancer.
Then, during last Christmas holidays, I had a regularly scheduled visit with my oncologist. My blood panels showed elevated markers for a recurrence of colon cancer. Further tests showed it had recurred on my liver. Again, the surgery was successful in removing all evidence of the cancer. This time, radiation was not an option.
But, a strong round of chemo was indicated.
I'm now about two months into a six month treatment period. One of the side effects I've noticed is that, even on my good days during each treatment cycle, I don't tolerate heat too well. This comes as we move into the Southern California summertime. Now my car and it's non-working AC has become a problem.
In this situation, I can't work a normal work schedule. I'm out of commission about half the time and only about 85-90% for the rest. We've drained our saving down to an uncomfortable level. We don't have the monthly income to afford the repairs. Thus, I'm asking for your help.
The current estimate is that it will cost about $900 to repair the AC. (That figure is a little lower because some other repairs in the meantime took care of part of the problem.) I'm asking for your help in the amount of $1200 to cover contingencies, which seem to always pop up.
I will make this pledge to you:
· Whatever amount of the funds raised here is not required for the AC repair will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
· When I do gain employment with a steady income, I will donate an amount equal to the total funds raised here less whatever amount I donated according to the first item of this pledge.
In the end, your entire contribution will be donated to a cause more worthy than I.
Your help with this will be a godsend and will be deeply appreciated.
