Alison's Medical Fund

Alison was originally diagnosed with endometrial stromal sarcoma in 2006. Since that initial diagnosis, God has sustained her and her family through three recurrences of the disease, the most recent of which was in May of 2017, when a tumor was discovered in the mesentery (a layer of tissue that connects various organs in the lower abdomen).

The last recurrence in 2015 presented significant surgical difficulties, even for our world-class surgeon at Shands Medical Center in Gainseville, Fl, and resulted in an 11 hour surgery, sepsis (a serious blood infection) and a month's stay in the hospital after a perforation in the bowel.

In light of this history, our doctors in Tallahassee and the Shands surgeon (now retired) have uniformly recommended that this next surgery be done by the finest surgeon available.

As it turns out, surgeons of that caliber are hard to find! But by the grace of God we found a fabulous surgeon at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City who would take Alison's case.

In early June 2017 we visited our new surgeon at MSK. He was warm and hopeful, and explained that he concurred that the tumor would require a complicated surgery to remove, and that he was willing to perform it, supported by a team of other fine surgeons there at MSK.

He has scheduled the surgery for July 12.  He told us that  even though an extended stay in the hospital is likely given Alison's history, he was confident he could remove the tumor and expected a full recovery.

Thankfully our daughter Abby and some wonderful Kappa Delta sisters live in New York City and are willing and able to provide support.

The reality is, however, that a journey of this magnitude will require the coordination of a much larger support network, especially in light of the likely need for us to remain in NYC for a month or more.

Your contribution to Alison's medical fund will allow her to receive the high-level professional care she requires, for Tom to be able to walk side by side with her through the weeks ahead while away from their home in Tallahassee, and for Hannah, our youngest, who is just transitioning to college, to be properly involved and supported in the journey.

Assuming Alison's condition remains stable, we are planning to return to NYC on July 10 to prep for the surgery. It would be advantageous for the campaign to be fully funded by then.

Thank you in advance for considering a donation to Alison's medical fund. We are so grateful to you for your generosity and prayers, and to God for His sustaining grace and mercy.

Blessings to you all!
