Dear reader, if you know me the you probably know one of the most difficult things for me to do in life is to ask for help. However, my current situation combined with a serious health issue have made me desperate. At 49 years old I have been forced to move in with my parents here in Florida. It took months to find a job and 3 weeks into that new job I was diagnosed with Osteomyelitis. It's a serious infection that is potentially life threatening. In my case, the infection is in my vertebrae at the base of my neck on the C5 and C6 vertebrae. Given the location it is very painful. I was admitted to the hospital under emergency conditions and remained there for a week. I have not had medical insurance since my divorce 6 years ago. If I had insurance, I would still be in the hospital. What I am dealing with now is going for IV infusion for 3 hours every day. I have to get to the hospital where they stick me with an IV hookup for antibiotics. This will continue for at least 6 weeks in hopes that it works. If you read up on this infection you will see how potentially serious it is. The infection likes to eat bone. I am hoping nothing goes wrong and I avoid paralysis. Another danger is if it gets into the blood stream. The best possibility would have been a biopsy and then they could be very specific with the antibiotics. The neurosurgeons at the hospital did not want to do one due to the dangerous location. So, I get massive doses of antibiotics for several hours every day. I literally have no money and have been unable to work and earn any. Just the antibiotic treatment alone is over $4,000. I am unsure what the week long hospital stay will cost but I know it will be much more than that. During that week they gave me many different antibiotics and didn't mind mentioning that some of them were very expensive. One problem is that I am allergic to the Penicillin family of antibiotics so that limits my treatment. Another issue is that the family do not have the money to help me. I am having trouble just coming up with gas to get back and forth for treatment. All the while normal, basic bill keep adding up. I have cut out almost everything as far as expenses but I still nee to pay for a cell phone, take care of the car, get gas, pay car insurance, etc..  this is very hard for me to ask for help but I simply do not know what else to do. Thankfully the family can afford to let me not pay rent but that is it. Food is expensive. Everything is expensive when you have no money and no way to make any. I hope treatment works over these next 5 or 6 weeks well enough so that I may go back to work but in the meantime I am in a lot of pain 24/7 and am very worried about my health. I don't want to think of the things that can go wrong. This illness is also keeping me from attending my life long best friend's funeral services as I can't afford to fly to New England for it. 40 yrs as best friends and I feel like I should be there.
