Meet Matias. When Matias was born just over a year ago in Cortazar, Guanajuato, Mexico, his parents, Iliana and Isaias, had the same hopes for him every parent does. They wanted him and his older brother to fully experience childhood, grow up healthy and strong and get a good education.
In many ways Matias is just like any other one year old "“ he is fussy when he is hungry or tired and loves playing with his older brother's toys. However, Matias faces a special challenge other children don't. Matias was born with cleft palate, a birth defect that will hinder the formation of his skull, impair his ability to speak and impact his self-esteem. As a baby, one of his first instincts was to clutch his little fist to cover his mouth.
Babies with a cleft palate should have their first surgery before they are six months old; however, his parents do not have the financial means to make this commitment. In addition to the costly initial treatments, Matias will need three surgeries over the course of the next two years.
To help Matias and his family, I want to raise $5,000 to cover some of Matias' medical expenses and help his family relocate to Chiapas- where two surgeons have offered to wave 60% of the surgical cost. I'm asking you to donate what you can and share Matias' story with your friends and family. This is more than giving Matias a smile, this is giving him a life-changing opportunity to grow up the way you and I did.
