33 cats rescued from a flat

Hi, I run cat and kitten rescue in Middlesbrough. Today we went out to evaluate a complaint that many cats and kittens were living in appalling conditions and being starved, after the usual larger charities were called and dismissed the complaint over the phone.

What I walked into was jaw dropping. Locked rooms filled with cats and kittens, with little more than bowls of water. Some rooms even without a window. Those that did have windows had them taped shut.

overflowing litter trays meant they were using the floor mostly for toileting. They had no bedding, no food, no toys, just bare rooms filled with their own feaces and urine and no air.

They were desperate for food, desperately fighting over it as it was thrown down whilst we continued taking count of cats in the other locked rooms.

I thought I’d be able to evaluate, take the worst cases, leave food and return gradually removing the animals over time, as space is just so scarce in rescues.

Unfortunately that wasn’t the case and I wasn’t leaving without EVERY animal on that property. No one was getting left behind to live like that another day.

Carriers were filled with petrified kittens, kittens that have never been in a box, had barely been handled, some hardly seeing the light of day.

There was no time to think, no time to cry, if my eyes were stinging and my breathing difficult, then theirs had to be too.

5 hours later and 33 cats and kittens have been removed.

Come midnight and im still filling the house with more temporary crates, organising foster placements, feeding, watering and consoling those that are scared, whom have known nothing but 4 walls in an empty disgusting room.

This woman has been breeding purposely, for profit. And only at the expense of the animals health and well-being.

Our next problem is our vet account was suspended this week after 10 years with the same practice, because I wouldn’t agree to a healthy cat being put to sleep just because he tested positive for FIV. That leaves us facing the difficult task of getting all these 33 vet care, neutered, vaccinated, wormed, flea treated, microchipped, with no account, no discount, no running up a bill and gradually paying it off. Therefore we will have to accept appointments from any local vets who can help us and have to pay all costs in full and up front.

 

There is also an injured kitten who has no use of her back end or back legs who will need X-rays, possibly an operation but certainly at least making sure she isn’t in any pain or discomfort.
