My name is Kate and this is the story of my brother John:
Our family was blessed with John Stephen Bynum on September 5, 1997. From that day on our lives were forever changed. John was born prematurely with Down's Syndrome. At 8 months old he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. At age two John lost all of his hair due to Alopecia and has had an awesome bald head since! At three he was diagnosed with Celiac and Hypothyroidism. His occassional Diabetic seizures soon turned into full blown Epilepsy at age 10. At 12, John was the size of your average 5 year old so he had to have a feeding tube. He is still a little guy but it has helped A LOT! Due to the long term effects of Diabetes he was diagnosed with Kidney Disease at age 17 along with Autism.
Financially, caring for John has not been easy but my parents have always found a way through various means including loans. My Dad is a Truck Driver and my Mom is a Montessori Teacher. My parents work very hard, however, my mom cannot work when John is ill and is not paid for days missed. The money they make now goes to a medication that allows for food digestion and absorption. It costs $3500.00 per month out of pocket. Due to this expense they now live with my husband, baby and I. John is 18 and they are in the process of working with an attourney to secure his Social Security to provide financially for his medical care.
John is the reason I am who I am today. He is the happiest little man! His strength makes it sometimes seem like nothing is wrong. But lately his strength has hit its limit. He has been displaced from his home and we are not able to afford his medication. At this point he emotionally and physically he is at risk of hospitalization. Please help me provide physical care for my brother. I am asking for help with the next three months of medication.
