Study Abroad in Granada

Hi, everyone! My name is Dana Phillips. I am a junior at Denison University with a double major in International Studies and Women’s & Gender Studies. This coming spring, I have the amazing opportunity to study abroad in Granada, Spain through a program offered by Arcadia University. This is an immersive program where I will be studying Spanish intensively, participating in an internship with a local education center, and doing research for my International Studies concentration.

For my concentration I’ll be researching the borders of Ceuta and Melilla, two Spanish territories located in Morocco, and the only land borders of the European Union. I’ll be focusing especially on how these borders have evolved in response to the influx of migrants trying to enter into Europe. I hope to study international politics and peace and conflict resolution in graduate school and I know that the research I’ll conduct while on this program is a huge step in the right direction!
I LOVE doing research and learning about the world. This past summer I did research on Arab hip hop music and last semester I completed two research projects, one entitled “Black Girl To Black Woman: The Power of Everyday Resistance and Knowledge Acquisition in the Formation of Identity for Black Women Attending Predominantly White Institutions” and the other called “A Community That Feels Like Home: Challenges Faced by Bhutanese-Nepali Refugees and How They Address These Challenges”.
I am currently attending Denison on a full tuition academic scholarship. This scholarship has made it possible for me to receive the amazing education that Denison offers and I am incredibly grateful. However, this scholarship does not cover any of the costs of studying abroad. I worked as full-time student researcher at Denison this summer and I am currently working on campus as a tutor, a tour guide, and a Writing Center consultant. My parents will do all they can to assist but it is a lot to carry without getting any merit or need based support from the school. Through my summer and work-study jobs, I’m saving all I can towards my study abroad tuition, but with next semester rapidly approaching, I’m currently looking for ways to supplement my savings. ANY donations would be so incredibly appreciated.
