Captain Kirk Harness Memorial Fund

Donation protected
Hi,
This in memory of my Dad,
Navy Captain, Kirk Harness 8/6/59 - 7/9/2011.

My name is Helena Harness, I am 17 years old and am setting up a gofudnme as part of my AVID project at school.

My goal is to raise awareness about LUNG CANCER and that it can happen to anyone, not just people who smoke. My Dad never smoked and led a very healthy life - he golfed and fished and played softball.
Sadly, we caught the tumor too late, he battled for 18 months and was so brave throughout his ordeal.

He lived every moment to the fullest in his life, especially during his fight against cancer. In fact, the last time I saw him he was getting ready to board a ship to cruise to Bermuda for a short vacation. At the time he was very weak as he had pneumonia, however he didn't let that stop him.
He waved me goodbye at the bustop and off I went to school, having no clue that would be the last time I would see him. I was 12  my brother was 8.

The night before my dad was due to come back, my brother and I were so excited to see him the next morning so we went to bed early. Tragically my mom got the phone call late that night to say that he had passed away on the cruise ship. We awoke the next morning from excitement to see him, to devastation and confusion at the news of his death.

He passed away at sea like a true sailor. He was happiest on the water and I believe he knew he didn't have long to go and saved us all the pain of seeing him die.

I would like to set up a memorial fund in his name. He served his country for 25 years, a graduate from the Naval Academy and retired as a Navy Captain. He didn't deserve lung cancer - he was 51 when he died.
I hope to be able to use the funds for donations to lung cancer research through the Lung Cancer Research Foundation and the American Cancer Society for research on Non Small Cell Carcinoma as well as helping people in need for paying for medical bills.

The money I raise will also be used to set up public service announcements in my community to help raise the awareness of lung cancer and to keep our lungs healthy. You don't have to be a smoker to get lung cancer.

My AVID project date is April 30th and I hope to set up the funds by then.
WITH YOUR HELP I CAN ACHIEVE THIS.

This means so much to me because my dad meant so much to me. He was a dedicated father and a dedicated member of the United States Military. I wish to have his legacay live on in my community so that his fight with cancer may give others help to survive.

I will be humbled and thankful with your help and I thank you all for remembering my father.

Humble Thanks
Helena Harness xxx
