Dwight's Medical Fund

Late last year, I was diagnosed with testicular cancer.  Due to concerns about the rate of growth, the doctors cut it out very shortly thereafter, and so far things are looking ok.  On top of that, we had good insurance, so we were able to handle our portion of the payments without too much trouble.

There's about an 11% chance that the cancer spread to my lungs and/or lymph nodes.  Because of the risk of spread, the doctors want to do a number of tests this year and slowly taper off the tests over the next 5 years until they're sure I'm ok.  This is going to require chest x-rays (for my lungs) and CT scans (for my lymph nodes).  The x-rays aren't especially expensive, but the CT scans run at about $4700 each, and they want to do three of them this year alone.

My first CT scan is supposed to happen in the middle of March.  Given the low quality of our insurance this year and the fact that I just lost my job, I don't know how we're going to pay for it.  We're going to shop around, and I'm looking for other work, but we need help with this soon.

Ashley and I have tried our best against a variety of troubles we've faced to stand on our own two feet before asking for help from friends, family, and community, but we all have limits.  When I lost my job last week, knowing our upcoming healthcare costs, I felt as if I was about to break.  So thank you for your kindness.

Ashley and I recently purchased a relatively new car to facilitate transportation to her new job.  We've had concerns about consistent transportation for work since last year, but we put off buying a car because of the surgery.  With her job starting next Monday, we didn't want to wait any longer.  We tried to choose a basic car that would be a good long-term investment: The increased pay at her new job will cover the down payment and monthly payments over the first year, with a little left over.

The donations in these first few hours has been astounding, and in an effort to honor that kindness, I've adjusted the goal downward a couple of times to reflect ongoing calculations about our expected need.  I've taken a closer look at our finances to refine our estimate, given our income and current liabilities.

Someone who saw my GoFundMe offered me a job! Between now and my first CT scan, I should be able to earn most of the remaining shortfall, so I've reduced the donation goal to the current donation total.  Thanks, everybody, from me and Ashley!
