Genne and Maynor are expecting their little girl, Mia Rose Sofia, in February 2017. Recently, they received devastating news that Mia’s heart is not developing properly. Her condition is called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, or HLHS.
Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome
The left side of Mia’s heart is not growing, which pumps blood everywhere in her body, except to her lungs - that’s the job of the right side of her heart, which is developing normally. It is a rare disease (affecting 4 out of 10,000 children), but there is hope for her with the miracle of modern medicine.
She will need three heart surgeries in her first 5 years of life. Her first surgery will be within 1 week of being born. Essentially, the surgeries will insert a device to allow the right side of her heart to also do the work of the left side.
Exciting Therapies
Genne has been doing her homework. She has contacted doctors across the country, including the Mayo Clinic, Boston General Hospital, Johns Hopkins and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, to learn about her condition and the best course of action. The most exciting option at this time, based on her diagnosis and preliminary testing, involves the injection of stem cells to strengthen the left side of her heart. Stem cell therapy is a very new approach and experimental in nature, but promising, nonetheless.
How can we help Genne, Maynor and Mia?
We hope insurance covers the cost of Mia’s surgeries and treatment. However, Genne and Maynor will have a lot of expenses to travel to and stay in another city as well as miss work to be with her in the hospital, which could be a month or more after she is born.
Any donation to help with these expenses is so appreciated by Genne, Maynor and both of their families. It will go a long way to allow them to focus on Mia’s health and reduce stress associated with financial difficulties.
Lots of children with HLHS have great outcomes. They can run, play on sports teams and grow up to adulthood. We hope and pray that will be Mia’s story!
