Red Door School for Autism
www.thereddoorschool.comDepartment of Education : Roll No. 20381D
The Red Door is a special school for children with autism and complex needs, in Dublin, Ireland. It is a small school with only 24 children who have autism and moderate learning difficulties.
Autism is a lifelong developmental disorder which impairs a child’s natural instinct to communicate, form relationships and learn. Children with moderate to severe autism really require 1:1 attention for the whole day, and the children in the Red Door benefit from having dedicated, experienced tutors working 1:1 with each child, teching them a mix of speech and vocabulary, reading, handwriting, motor skills, social skills, behavioural skills and life skills.
The Red Door uses Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), Picture Exchange, Sign Language and Speech & Language Therapy and Sensory Integration and PE to help pupils communicate their needs and feelings and deal with their need for sensory input. This helps them to be open for learning and play. All the pupils are making remarkable progress in their development. Our parent support group meetings help parents augment this progress at home with behavioural issues and dietary problems, amongst others.
State funding from the Department of Education only goes part of the way towards meeting the full costs of running The Red Door School. It really just covers the basics. We need to raise our own funds every year.
Our school is in very old prefabs, there is an application with the DES since 2017 to have them replaced, they have agreed to replace them, but it could be another year before that happens. In the meantime, as of 1st Feb 2020, the school is closed because our electrical system has broken down, leaving us with no electricty and no storage heating.
We'd appreciate even a very small donation, every penny adds up and will go a long way for us. Every penny gratefully received will be put to very good use. Could we please share with your friends to help us reach our target. Many thanks!!
