Harley’s Cancer Treatment

In August last year, our lovely Harley was diagnosed with a Mast Cell Tumour on her head which was surgically removed and the costs were covered by a mixture of insurance and us. Unfortunately, since Christmas two further Mast Cell Tumours have grown, one on her head and a large one on her left shoulder (visible on the main photo). She also has an additional tumour in her stomach which, unusually, is a different type of tumour altogether. Without this treatment, her prognosis isn’t good, however we have decided to give treatment another go as she is such a happy and otherwise healthy dog who is a huge part of our family. The oncologist has advised that the targeted chemotherapy should shrink all three tumours and side effects of the treatment are rare. Harley started the chemotherapy a week ago and is currently doing well. The insurance company have paid £1500 towards this treatment but they will not contribute anything else so we have borrowed money to cover the additional costs so far of £1400.

Over the next 3 – 6 months Harley will need ongoing chemotherapy treatment costing £600 per month, she also has to take steroids and 2 lots of antihistamines, because the tumours were releasing histamine which was making her poorly. Harley will also need regular CT/ultra-sound scans to check the tumours and she may also need surgery, costing up to £3000, depending on how well the chemotherapy works.

Since rescuing Harley from the Manchester Dogs Home in 2010, she has brought us endless amounts of happiness. She is such a friendly, funny dog who always makes us laugh and brings a smile to everyone’s face. We are hoping to raise £10,000 to cover the cost of any treatment over the next 6 months and anything we raise above what is needed for her treatment, will be donated to Manchester Dogs Home to support the amazing work they do.

Given the pandemic, we know that times are hard for people, so please only donate what you can but we know that Harley holds a special place in many people’s hearts and we are truly grateful for any amount that you are able to donate.
