Hello everyone! I am seeking funding for the College of
Charleston's Neuroscience Seminar in Germany. It is a four week long program.
The program consists of an upper-level course involving lectures by leading
researchers and hands-on work in a laboratory. The program is taught at two
universities from the German Schools of Neuroscience consortium, Charité
Medical University in Berlin and Ludwig Maximilians Universitat in Munich.
Earlier this year, I attended a meeting about
the highly competitive Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship. The other attendees
were scholars like myself, except there was one difference that became
embarrassingly apparent; I was the only person in the room that had never
traveled out of the country. I was aware of but had never paid much attention
to the international experience my education is missing. I have wanted to
attend the College's Neuroscience Seminar in Germany since I entered as a
freshman, but I have spent my past two summers doing neuroscience research. In
that meeting I decided that I had to study abroad this summer, even if it means
leaving my research for a month.
The neuroscience study abroad program is
a perfect match for me because it will allow me to finally experience another
part of the world while I develop intellectually. Although I have substantial
experience working in a behavioral neuroscience laboratory, I have not
attempted any other type of neuroscience research. The seminar will give me the
opportunity to explore other research options. It will also allow me to interact
with some of today's major neuroscientists, as well as students with diverse
backgrounds, and build a network in the neuroscience community. The cities
where I will study also offer so much to learn about the history of
neuroscience and the culture of my family's background. I am positive that the
neuroscience seminar in Germany will intellectually cultivate my mind more than
I can even imagine thus far.
