Mark Haueter Cancer Battle

Marco Island is a small community. When one of our own needs assistance, this community steps up to the plate. One of the members of our Police Department, Sergeant Mark Haueter, has recently been diagnosed with Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma – a rare mouth cancer diagnosed in only 1% of cancer cases.
Mark was first diagnosed with cancer by his ENT specialist in late June 2016. He was immediately referred to cancer specialists at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida. He was informed that chemo and radiation were not options. The cancer will have to be surgically removed. Mark has already undergone two unsuccessful surgeries in an attempt to remove the cancer.
A third operation is scheduled for late October 2016. After the surgeons remove the remaining cancer, Mark will undergo radical reconstructive surgery to rebuild his nasal cavity and palate. The process will include removing a free flap section of his left forearm and inserting it into his mouth to “plug the hole.”
Mark will spend one to two weeks in the hospital after surgery. He will then rehabilitate at home for an additional one to two months.
Mark has medical insurance. However, he will incur significant out-of-pocket expenses, i.e., co-pays and deductibles. In addition, since the operation will take place in Tampa, there will be pre and post-operative travel expenses.
This Go Fund Page is being set up so that Mark can concentrate solely on healing, without the burden of a large financial obligation as well.
For those of you who don’t know Mark, below is a short bio.
Mark is 34 years old. He was born and raised in Bolivar, Ohio. He’s always been civic-minded. He served three terms as a Township Trustee in Lawrence Township, Tuscarawas County.
Mark began his law enforcement career with the Stark County Sheriff’s Office in 2004. He spent seven years there, assigned to the Jail and Civil Divisions, and finally Road Patrol.
Mark moved to Marco Island in 2012. He is currently assigned as the School and Community Resource Sergeant and D.A.R.E. certified instructor.
Mark is extremely active within the Marco Island Community and the Marco Island Police Department, including FTO certification. He is also a Police Union Representative, Pension Board Member, as well as member of the Marco Island Police Honor Guard.
Mark is a single father of 7-year-old daughter, Kyleigh Faith.
