Anne's Medical Bills

Anne came into the hospital on Wednesday, April 3rd because she was having trouble taking in a deep breath.  After many tests administered, the doctors discovered that she has Congestive Heart Failure.  They administered a diuretic (water pill) to drain the water that had filled her lungs.  They admitted her in to the hospital that night.  The cardiologist seemed hopeful that everything was going to be fine with the right medications.  On Thursday, April 4th she was breathing great, feeling good and Dr. said she could probably go home the next day...then all of sudden out of nowhere, she went into cardiac arrest.  An amazing nurse resuscitated her and they rushed her to ICU.  The cardiac arrest was due to Ventricular tachycardia (V-tach) it is a fast heart rhythm, that originates in one of the ventricles of the heart. The ventricles are the main pumping chambers of the heart. This is a potentially life-threatening arrhythmia because it may lead to ventricular fibrillation, asystole, and sudden death. The doctors now have her in Coronary Care Unit.  She has been stable, but very sick.  The cardiologist is looking at inserting a defibrillator in her chest which will hopefully save her life in case she were to ever have a V-tach to cause cardiac arrest.  The doctors want to keep her in the hosptial one more week.  Totalling 15 days.  All the tests, the hospitalization, doctors, nurses, surgery, and devises are costing a fortune.  Anne DOES NOT have health insurance.  The cost of the medical bills has been stressful for her.  Each day she mentions it and questions how she will be able to afford it.  At one point the cardiologist wanted to move her to Cedars Sinai Cardiovascular Center, but Cedars Sinai denied her care because she doesn't have health insurance.  It's so sad how our country is when it comes to our health care system.  No other country is like ours, they take care of their people.
