Gabby Smith (Stroke)
Hi! My name is Gabrielle Smith and I'm super excited to be representing Canada this summer! My training partner, Julia, and I will be racing at the Under 23 World Rowing Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands this August. Together we've been training out of Lac Brome in Knowlton, Quebec in preparation for racing at the championships. I've been living in Montreal for the past 4 years while completing a degree in Cellular Biology at McGill University. I've had the opportunity to represent Canada twice in the past, firstly at the Commonwealth Rowing Championships in 2014 and secondly at the U23 World Championships last year. Both of my international racing regattas so far have helped me to really elevate my training and become a much better athlete. The experience I get from racing this year will help me in my eventual goal of winning a gold medal at the Olympics!
Julia Vander Hoeven (Bow)
My name is Julia Vander Hoeven, and I have been rowing for the past 6 years. I tried rowing in my first year of highschool and instantly fell inlove with the sport. I spent most of my junior rowing career training with St. Catharines Rowing Club and Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School. This past year I have had the pleasure of studying and rowing at the University of California Berkeley and will return there in September. I am extremely excited to have been selected, along with my partner Gabby, to represent Canada at this years Under 23 World Rowing Championships in Rotterdam. This will be my first time representing Canada and racing at an international level. I feel so lucky to have been given this opportunity. For most of the summer Gabby and I have been training on Lac Brome in Knowlton Quebec, and we are super appreciative of how supportive the whole community has been!
What we are fundraising for!
Rowing Canada Aviron provides as much funding as possible to cover the costs of the world championships for the athletes but because this is an Olympic year a lot of money goes towards the athletes competing in Rio. We are asking you to help us cover the cost of flights, accommodations, food, equipment and uniforms. Any donation would be helpful and greatly appreciated. With your support we hope to represent Knowlton and Canada the best we can!
