Help Sunni Stewart pay for her dream school!

Hi, my name is Sunni Stewart, and I’m a black artist based in NYC. My mother likes to joke that when she gave me a crayon to draw with when I was a toddler, I started drawing and never stopped. And I’d have to agree with her; my childhood was filled with painting, drawing, and even storytelling. In fact, it was my love for stories that inspired me to make a series of comics with my best friend in elementary school, where a girl named Momo fought crime and saved the world. It was this love for comics that pushed me to pursue visual storytelling as a career.

My passion for art and creativity lead me to the School of Visual Arts in New York City, which is where I study Cartooning. The school is amazing! I’ve met so many helpful and inspiring people, and I’m finally getting the opportunity to learn so much about an art form that means so much to me.

Unfortunately, I’m not able to afford tuition by myself. My parents can’t help me pay because of different medical issues in my family, and there’s no one else outside of them that I can turn to for help. Currently, I have an outstanding balance with the School of Visual Arts, and I must pay that off before I can even register for classes for the coming Fall semester. And while I am working two jobs to chip away at what I owe, I figured that setting up a GoFundMe could also help me with this endeavor.

(The goal I set for this is less than the true cost, but it would definitely help in making the price less daunting for me to pay. The true cost is a little over 10k.)

Comics is a unique form of storytelling. It’s when every panel on a page is its own pocket of illustration, when all of them, woven together, create riveting stories in a visual medium. It’s through my comics that I wish to write stories where marginalized groups are able to see themselves in a more positive light. Where people who are black, LGBT+, or both, can see themselves as heroes. For me, going to this school is one of the first steps to reaching that dream, and it would mean the world if you could help me.
