On September 5th, my little sister was diagnosed with cervical cancer at 30 years of age. This is something unimaginable when you are talking about someone who is young and healthy. My sister and brother-in-law had been trying for a couple years to get pregnant. In February, they did round 1 of IVF, which sadly ended with a miscarriage in March. On August 4th, they went to their first appointment to get started with round 2 of IVF. At this appointment she had an ultrasound in which their fertility doctor discovered a 3 cm mass on her cervix. After many tests she was referred to an oncologist. September 5th was her first appointment with the oncologist. The doctor did an ultrasound and compared the previous one from the fertility doctor in which revealed that the mass had doubled in size, just in one month! On September 8th, a PET scan was done. Results came back on September 11th, showing that the cancer appeared to be maintained within her cervix. The results also showed inflammation in her appendix, so the doctor added that to the surgery as well. On September 13th, Corinne had a hysterectomy and her appendix removed. The surgery went well. The doctor removed a one inch margin past her cervix which tested negative for cancer. On Monday, the results from the pathology report came back. After the surgery we hoped that this nightmare would be over. She is now scheduled next week to set up the radiation treatment schedule. The doctor said without radiation there is a 30-40% chance of the cancer coming back and with radiation it decreases to 10%.

Corinne is in the 1% of healthy women with previously normal pap smears to be diagnosed with this horrible aggressive form of cervical cancer. She never had any symptoms and the reason for all of this remains unknown.
