Please help us help Monica Steele's family. Her family is devastated by the events that have happened to them this last week.
My name is David Kasten, a friend of the family for almost 10 years. Mine, and the friends of this family's, hearts are breaking over the tragedy that has unfolded for Monica, her three children and granddaughter since Thursday (June 23rd)
On Thursday, (23rd) Monica's husband went to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Clinic to assess what they would be able to do for him with his cancer diagnosis. They immediately recommended that he go to the the emergency room where he was admitted. By that evening they had moved him to ICU because his cancer had moved into all his major organs and they had begun to shut down. The family was told that MD Anderson would not be able to do anything for him but keep him comfortable and sadly she would lose her husband and the father of her children. Early Monday morning we lost Buddy Steele; a loving Husband, caring Father, a devoted Friend, and a Marine who served his Country dutifully that he loved.
When the family was told that he had passed, they were devastated. Upon checking on Monica just a few hours later (the same morning) to see how she was doing, we had to rush her to the emergency room at a local hospital here in Katy, Texas. After a C.T. scan we were told the hospital had to call and send her to the Texas Medical Center by Life Flight immediately! There we learned Monica had a massive stroke and would be in the Neuro-ICU at least two which could be at least six months. She is currently in a medically induced coma and we are praying that she will be able to recover.
The family had not been able to fully adjust that her husband and their father had cancer before they were told that treatment would not be successful, and then had to watch him slowly slip away, and then lose him. Then while trying to grieve the loss of their father - their mother had the massive stroke that caused her to need to have parts of the occipital bone removed to ease the swelling and pressure and is in a coma. She is incapacitated and unable to make the arrangements for her husband's service, handle the household affairs, or be their for her and Buddy’s three children to grieve.
We are asking for help for Monica and her three children, Trey, Patrick, Ashley - and their granddaughter Marley (who lives with them). We are raising money for the following immediate needs:
The service and burial of Buddy Steele who will be buried at Houston Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Paying the rent of Monica’s shop (she is a fantastic hair dresser) for a few months to keep this available until doctors can assess if she will be able to return to work (we have not been able to determine if her motor skills had been seriously affected yet).
Pay the mortgage on their home for a few months.
Help pay their current expenses such as utilities, groceries, bills and car payments to ensure that they are getting paid and not adversely affect their finances in a negative way. We can make sure Monica has one less thing to worry about we she comes home.
The remainder of the money, beyond these immediate needs, are to help the family pay for Buddy’s medical expenses such as his deductible and co-pays for his five days at MD Anderson; and, Monica's medical expenses.
As if all these things happening to this family were not enough……..everything was legally set up to for Monica to take care of if anything had happened to Buddy. Under normal circumstances this would have taken care of the family financial wise, but with Monica incapacitated and unable to sign or handle anything, absolutely nothing is coming to the family to help with these expenses and to pay for Buddy’s services and bury him on an immediate basis. We want to try to help them with these expenses. Trying to keep as much as we can, as normal as we can, to take the worry of not being able to bury their father, keep the house and pay the bills while they are grieving for their father. While also trying to get through what has happened to their mother (my dear friend) and help her recover.
We have loved this caring and wonderful family for so long! It hurts our hearts to see what they have lost, what they are going through right now. We want to take as much burden off these children, right now, as we can and preserve as much as possible for Monica when we are Blessed to be able to bring her home.
