Help us rebuild our fire-damaged home
On Sunday night, our family home was seriously damaged by a fire that started in our next door neighbor's house. Thankfully, our whole family, including our 6 year old and our two cats, made it out safely, but our house no longer has a roof and the water damage is extensive.
The insurance company has found us a furnished apartment/condo to live in while the house is cleaned and repaired. It will take some time, not only because of the extent of the damage but because all of the contractors for the connected houses will have to coordinate in replacing the roofs. Our coverage is for restoring it to its former state, but the builders will have to build it all to code. Unfortunately, this means that the entire cost of reconstruction will not likely be covered.
We don't know yet what the difference between our coverage and our costs will be, but we do know we'll need to find some funds to cover it. We started this page so we can begin to raise money to cover the costs of rebuilding. Any and all help is deeply appreciated!
We have been given some hope that some of our most prized possessions might be salvageable (paintings, solid wood furniture, photo albums). We have also been told that much of our clothing will be cleaned and returned. For those things that can't be saved we will be covered for replacement.
Our temporary home is at Yonge and Eglinton, far from our "˜hood and Mae's school but she will continue to attend her school. I will drive her in and spend the day in the Junction at the home of a very generous friend who has offered to let me use her place as a home base during most days. This will make it possible to keep up our connections in our home communities and minimally disrupt my and Mae's routines. On the bright side, Howard's commute will be cut in half.
