Reuben’s Path To Breathing Easier!

As many of you know, my dad, Reuben Hand, received the miracle phone call we never thought would come on Friday, December 4, 2020. This weekend has been a whirlwind of emotions and now we are planning the path to his healing. He was accepted to the UAB Lung Transplant program back in October 2020 after being declined by several other programs. He was placed on the Lung Transplant list for a double lung transplant at the end of October. For the past month, he and my mom have been planning what this would mean if he received the call. We never in a million years thought this day would come so quickly, so we were caught a little off guard and didn’t really have time to start saving to cover the financial aspect of the recovery process. Reuben is currently in the CICU at UAB where he will remain for a few more days. He is progressing quickly and will be moving to his own room at UAB for at least 2 weeks where he will be monitored closely. After that, he will move into a housing community close to UAB Hospital for 3 months. They require this part because of the high risk of infection and rejection during this time. He must stay close to the hospital in case of emergency. During this time, my mom will remain his primary caregiver and stay with him. This GoFundMe is being set up to cover the cost of housing ($70-100/night x 3 months), food, and other essentials during their stay. My mother is retired, so they are living off their pensions to pay for normal living costs (mortgage, pets, etc.).
