Happy Day!
My name is America Holladay, I'm sixteen years old. I grew up in Boulder, a wee little town in Southern Utah. After attending the local high school for a year, I knew it wasn't for me. So I tried homeschool for a year, which is when I heard about Explorations Academy.
I've set up this account to help fund my last year at Explorations Academy. Its an alternative high school in Bellingham Washington that focuses on its students by igniting a passion for learning and exploring the world around them hands on.
I chose Explorations because it is an experientially-based high school that works to inspire it students to participate in and take responsibility for positive local and global change.
Instead of classes separated by grade level we are arranged in clusters. Every cluster has a theme relating to a topic they are studying each term.
Two of my favorites where Puget Sound, where I did an in depth study of the area around Bellingham including marine biology, WA state history, northwest literature and culture. I also had a cluster called GO BIG where we interned with local professionals, focused on personal health and well-being and did a ton of service work.
We spend a lot of time outdoors at Explorations. I run, hike, and camp in all kinds of weather. One of the highlights is the end of the year backpacking trip which is approximately 50 miles long.
This year I received a 90% scholarship to help fund my last year at Explorations, but there are still substantial costs that need to be covered such as my living expenses and the remainder of my tuition.
In total I need to raise $3000.00 to cover my expenses for the next ten months. I really love this school and greatly appreciate the meaningful and constructive experience I've had there.
I would like the opportunity to continue to become stronger, smarter and more prepared to enter adulthood with all the tools I need to thrive.
