Building Opportunity in Guatemala!

Donation protected
CCFC (Community Cloudforest Conservation) is a nonprofit that aleviates poverty and protects cloud forests in the central highlands of Guatemala through education, leadership training, agricultural development, reforestation, and research. The cloud forests that CCFC protect, are among the most vulnerable, valuable and biologically diverse ecosystems on earth. The tiny mountain villages that border the cloud forests are among the most impoverished in Guatemala and home to a group of indigenous Guatemalans, known as the Q'eqchi'. According to the US Aid for International Development, the human need is acute and the need for conservation is urgent.

CCFC takes a community based approach to conservation by working with the villages, families, farmers, youth and primary students that live at the edge of these great forests. Check out the website below for more information.

CCFC's ecology center, on a 1,200 acre campus, is home to two educational/training programs for youth and young women. CCFC began in a tiny thatch house on this campus. With the new facility we hope to fund, CCFC will be able to accept many more students into their educational programs. We are helping fund the last building project, which includes a large dormitory and cloud forest products processing center (jams, dried fruits, juices, and candles).

How will the money be used?
The money raiesd will be used to finish the roof,  purchase materials for the walls, and pay 7 local villagers for 7 months of work. Once we meet this goal, a generous third party has agreed to match our funds of $20,000 with an additional contribution of $10,000 if we raise it by December 31, 2016

We are a group from Ohio Dominican University who just returned from Guatemala, and lived at the center for 5 days witnessing the educational programs in action as we studied poverty and development. We have already sent $1,100 to the address below. This is an option for larger donations.

Why this matters to us.
This center will have impacts on the local villagers for decades to come. The income generated from products harvested on the land will create income for villagers, provide scholarships for students to continue education past elementary school, increase access to health care, encourage sustainable agricultural practices, reverse the devestation of deforestation, and most importantly empower people to support themselves in a dignified way.
