Love for Lois

Donation protected
On September 19th, Lois Haley was painting.  She was almost finished the cathedral ceiling on a 20 ft wall. In a second, Lois’ life changed when the ladder she was on slipped and left her falling from 14ft in the air and landing on the ceramic floor. She awoke, not understanding what happened and was able to call her family for help. She had no feeling in her lower half.

The ambulance arrived and she was taken to Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie. Lois had broken the 12th Vertebrae in her back, and two ribs with one rib puncturing her lung. She was rushed to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto to have emergency surgery on her spine.

Once the surgeons were able to perform the surgery they could see that Lois had a severe tear in spine cord that was causing her immobility. They put three steel rods in her back, reducing her pain dramatically, however due to the nature of her spinal cord injury were not confident in her ability to regain sensation in her legs.

Lois is in ICU at Sunnybrook now and will be moved into a regular as soon as the pressure of the ribs on her lungs is gone. In a regular room she will begin Physical Therapy as she continues to heal. From there she will be moved to the Lyndhurst Spinal Clinic in Sunnybrook to begin 6 – 8 week rehabilitation.

Lois owned a modest cleaning business. She woke every morning at 3 am to drive to Orillia from Penetanguishene to clean one of the local restaurants there. This accident has immediately changed her ability to earn her living and she has no insurance coverage for this type of life-changing event. The scope of the costs is not yet understood however the list is beginning. Changes within her home to allow accessibility, including ramps, door widening, showering facilities and the movement of laundry facilities are just the beginning. These coupled with the cost of equipment, including a wheel chair, lifts and bars and transportation makes the amount needed well over her savings.

Lois and her family have a long road ahead and the impact personally is great. We are so grateful to have the support of family and friends around us and thank you for kindly offering your assistance with covering some expenses to help minimize the financial stress of this terrible accident.
