Shoulder treatments not covered by insurance

Hi everyone! I’m hoping that you can help me once again. After the last 10 years of dealing with a rare cancer/stage 4 a few times, your extreme generosity and help allowed me to travel all over the country to find the right clinical trial for a rare form of sarcoma that I am now in remission from still. I’ve had lots of side effects from the treatments, but I know that I am still here for a reason. I have been putting off dealing with torn rotator cuffs in both of my shoulders. I have stretched out getting the maximum number of Cortizone shots in both shoulders and had really been hoping not have to have surgery on both shoulders, but the treatment that I had yesterday in Boston at Mass General in the orthopedic division to try and remove the calcium deposits via a less invasive method was unsuccessful. I went ahead and scheduled surgery for the end of December, right before The holidays. However I had also talk to the doctor again about shockwave therapy to heal up the chairs and remove the calcium deposits in with my shoulders. We had talked about it before however no insurance company will cover it despite it being less invasive than surgery or even the procedure I had yesterday. When I asked my doctor why that was he said, “insurance companies.” He did refer me to a physician at Spalding Rehabilitation in Cambridge that does the shock wave therapy. The cost to do both shoulders will be $1025. Seeing my cancer history the scheduler was extremely kind and offered to get me in to see the doctor this Thursday, November 5th. I’d have to pay the full amount upfront, but I could start the shock wave treatments the same day. My insurance will cover the evaluation appointment at least. According to my Mass General doctor yesterday, 80% of patients who are able to get the calcium deposits removed will never need surgery. As a musician and still budding guitar/ukulele/piano student—as well as a patient who’s been through seven surgeries in the last ten years—I love idea of possibly not needing surgery. The recovery time for one shoulder for surgery is about 4-6 months. I know how tough it is out there for everybody right now, but if you can help I’d be so grateful. Love you all!
