Emily Martha Rainsford’s cancer battle!

Donation protected
My grandmother, Emily Martha Rainsford, 66, who is a devoted mother of 4 (Henry, Joseph, Yvonne & Edward) loving grandmother of 10, and widow to Ronald Rainsford; was diagnosed with stage 4 ‘triple negative’ breast cancer in October 2019.

Emily, known fondly as Martha, has always lived a strong and healthy life. In her time she has served as a nurse for over 30 years, retiring as recent as 12 months ago. She is well known in the small town of Kadoma in Zimbabwe as the ‘mayor’, never shy to provide her home as a safe haven for people in need, willing to give up whatever she has to help others. One of the biggest trauma’s she faced in life being the loss of her husband to throat cancer in 1999. This tragic ordeal left her to raise 4 children alone, including putting them through school single handedly. She did a brilliant and successful job in raising her children. Emily Martha Rainsford has been blessed with a resilient and persistent spirit, she is not only a fighter but a survivor; nearly losing her life to cholera and surviving two heart attacks in 2014 and 2015.

When Emily was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019, the Doctors had little hope in her recovery as this cancer was extremely aggressive and had progressed so much. 21 tumours were found in her body. To everyone’s surprise after 12 very painful rounds of chemotherapy between November 2019 and February 2020; 20 of the 21 tumours had resolved. Only the original tumour remained, although it had substantially shrunk! After 6 more rounds of chemotherapy to ensure extra caution, the Doctors were astounded at the progression of her recovery. Emily underwent a double mastectomy, to remove both breasts. She came out of the 3 hours of surgery laughing and smiling walking around the hospital in high spirits only days later.

Throughout this whole journey, Emily has been so so incredibly strong. On days where she might have felt the urge to lay in bed full of sorrow she has chosen countless times to fight through the pain, going on daily walks and exercising, with a very strong will to live. Emily has been a huge encouragement to so many cancer patients. Her story has blessed and inspired many to hold onto hope and to not give up no matter how bad it may look. She has received so many phone calls asking her mentor people battling with cancer, particularly breast cancer.

Whilst awaiting a full recovery in July, Emily contracted what we thought to be shingles on her chest which was very painful for her. During that time, what no one was aware of was that these were actually cancer cells settling into the incisions of her mastectomy. Her cancer has come back aggressive and is in the walls of her chest. She had been prescribed a chemotherapy that specifically targets this area, however it is only available in the US, UK, and India, at an astronomical price. The second option of chemotherapy that has been recommended by her Doctors is easier to obtain.

Her next stage of battle is to fight off this new cancer that has settled in her scars, she is by no means willing to sit back and give up. Many Doctors and patients seek just a few moments with Emily who i’m so proud to call my grandmother, so she can mentor them and share her experiences with them, of how at 66 she has still woken up everyday a true fighter, no matter the obstacles life has thrown at her. Through these tough trials she’s endured, her courageous and beautiful character has been revealed in full. Her steadfast faith, strength, hope and brave enthusiasm to see off this terrible disease has blown the minds of many and touched hearts.

With much need, the Rainsford’s kindly ask you to be apart of this beautiful woman’s story of strength and help fund for her expensive treatment. We are confident that this will, in turn, help her overcome and win this battle for her life. Every donation means the absolute world to us and will bless our family tremendously!

(For some reason the withdrawals were put on hold because apparently I wasn’t clear about a few things. My name is Kiana Rainsford and Emily Martha Rainsford is my paternal grandmother. I have set up this fundraiser with the help of my uncle Edward Rainsford to help in the funding of her chemotherapy. This money will be transferred to Edward Rainsford via World remit.)
