Our dad, Steve, has dealt with some health issues in the past. In the past year or so, he started getting chest pains and had an episode that landed him in the er. After testing, the doctors felt a heart stent would be a good option. Once he set up the appointment, the pandemic happened. So, it had to be re-scheduled. Fast forward to August of 2020 (the year of unpredictability). Dad was ready to have his heart stent but...they stopped the procedure. The doctor didn't feel it was a safe option. He noticed that one of the blockages was at a fork in the artery. Three arteries were clogged pretty well. So, he reached out to another heart surgeon. Additional appointments confirmed that the heart stent wouldn't be the best option. It was decided that he should get a triple bypass heart surgery.  Now, dad is not a fan of surgery (but who is?). He doesn't do well with anesthesia and has other pre-existing conditions. We had a family meeting and of course he was more concerned about taking care of others. But, we all of course felt he should probably get the surgery. With covid, it's been a huge hassle. He's had to do multiple covid tests on top of a ton of pre-op testing for surgery. Some of the appointments (including the ones with the surgeon) will only allow the patient in because of covid protocol. We all wish that our mom could at least go in but, darn covid protocol. The surgery will be similar. My mom will be allowed to visit at certain times but there are many new regulations with covid. I know this will also be draining on her. She is not able to stay at the hospital overnight as my dad will spend his time there in the ICU. The surgery will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 5:30 am in Eau Claire. I believe it is a 2 hour prep, 5 hour surgery, and the list goes on. It will be a very long day.
