Help Save Amanda's Ugandan Business

Donation protected
One of the groups of people this pandemic has hit particularly hard has been freelance workers and those who have no recourse to any government support, or financial help offered by employers. This has doubly hit those who run a business from home.

Amanda is one such person. I first met Amanda several years ago on a research visit to Uganda. I was immediately struck by her ability to creatively problem solve, whilst at the same time holistically caring for those around her, checking everyone's physical and emotional needs. We struck up a friendship and have remained in contact ever since.

Her company, ‘About Africa’ educates those who travel with the company, connecting people in Africa and the rest of the world to Africa's tourism.  Through this approach the company works to create measurable changes in behaviour, knowledge and attitude that help to ensure a positive future for the people, communities and wildlife in Africa.

At the start of this year Amanda's new tourism business, www.about-africa.com   was looking forward to another year of growth. Then the pandemic happened, and she lost all her bookings and income. She is unable to pay her rent. She is at the point of losing shelter and a safe environment to live in and work from.  The house also contains all of Amanda's business paperwork including identity documents and passport, without which she can't run her business.

Amanda lives in the house she runs her business from, in Uganda, with her younger sister, her sister's two young children and a new baby.  With no support available from her extended family, this places Amanda in the position of having to also support them (including educating them).

I am looking to urgently raise £3,000. This will pay Amanda's rent arrears, help her secure a smaller place to live and enable her to support her family and keep her going until next year, when hopefully her tourism business will take off again. She is trying hard to find alternative work, and also planning how to re-launch the business.  She really wants to do this in a way which will also provide support for the women in the communities that she visits with tourists, whilst at the same time educating about women, families and their lives in Uganda.

"I lost my parents at a young age and my grandparents helped to raise me with the little resources they had.
By the age of 16 I tried to work in order to get education and also educate all those under my care. Since both my grandparents had died, I took on the responsibility of raising other orphans that were in my grandparents' care and caring for my younger sister, together with my sister's two young children and new baby." "About Africa is a company that educates and connects people in Africa and the rest of the world to Africa's tourism. We strive to create measurable changes in behaviour, knowledge and attitude that help to ensure a positive future for the people, communities and wildlife in Africa.

About Africa is a registered company. We are authentic! And we aim to design the memorable experiences you will always cherish once you go back to your home country. We offer Bespoke and Set Tours."  (Amanda 2020)
