My road to becoming a midwife

Donation protected
I am a student midwife about to enter my last semester of training. As I am completing acedemics through a long distance learning program, I am serving as a volunteer at a non profit birthing center in rural Northern Luzon Philippines.
This birthing center was started to offer an alternative to hospital or home birth here in Northern Luzon. It was the first of it's kind in this area. Many women here prefer to give birth at home with untrained traditional midwives to going to the hospitals where they would be mistreated and verbally and, too often, physically abused. The birth center where I volunteer offers competent, compassionate care at no cost to the patient.
As volunteers, we not only support the local staff midwives by helping in the clinic, but we are an important part of funding this amazing ministry. We pay a fee of $5000 dollars every 6 months. This covers our room and board, which is a minimal cost. But the majority of this fee goes into helping keep this clinic running and allowing for necessary improvements and expansions.
I have been a volunteer here for 1 year and 9 months already. In that time I have had the opportunity to witness some awe inspiring things. Women who would have died from hemorrhage if they had delivered at home. Adoptions that were handled with respect and compassion. Young women who came to us after a failed abortion who are so scared at the beginning but are instilled with strength and confidence by the end of their pregnancy.
When you support me, you are not only supporting this great organization, but you will be helping me to carry on the skills and ideals that I have learned here for many years to come. My intent in becoming a midwife has always been to use it as a platform to show love and compassion to women who are hurting and in a very vulnerable time in their lives. And seeing this in action as just intensified my passion. My long term goal is to work with teen moms and women in abusive situations, to bring love and light into their situation.
So, how I will be using the money that I raise is broken down as follows:
tuition- $5,000
misc semester costs (toiletries, transport, possible emergencies, etc)- $1,000
flight home- $1,000
new phone (an essential item for any midwife, and the one I had before, no longer works)- $500
transition costs (mainly food and gas until I can get a job and support myself)- $1500
The deadline for the first $6000 is July 31, 2016. The deadline for the rest is Feb. 1, 2017 (my graduation date).
This has been such an amazing adventure so far, and I have grown so much as a person and as a (soon to be) midwife. I am blown away by how much support that I have already recieved. I am so close to finishing this stage of my journey and I am so excited about the next one. I am so, so grateful for you genorosity!! Thank you!
