Jess was diagnosed with kidney failure at age 17.
A week later she was diagnosed with an auto immune Desease called Sjogrens Syndrome. ( Like Lupus)
This desease had attacked her Kidneys, and is also effecting her Liver, Heart etc .
The treatment for this was Steroids.
High doses of steroids caused her to end up having Avasvular Necrosis in the Hips ( Dead Hip Bones) which resulted in Jess having to have three hip replacements ,
The Left one had to be done twice as when she had open heart surgery for Pericarditis, she contracted Staph, so her first hip replacement which had been done at age 18 yrs had to be removed, as it got badly infected. She ended up in a wheelchair for 4 yrs. because of the steroids and being unable to walk, she put on 40kg!
When Jess was 20, I was getting worked up to give her a Kidney, The doctors found out that I had stage 3 Kidney Cancer! I had the kidney and cancer removed. She had saved my life!
Jess ended up on Dialasys for four and a half years. During this time Jess also lost all her peripheral Vision. She was Legally Blind. She had to hand in her licence. This devastated her as she lost all her independance. The doctors diagnosed her with Retinitis Pigmentoza, which inevitabley will go completely.
Jess received a Donated Kidney in 2008, which we are most greatful for to the family of the donor as it was 100% matching. Being permanently on anti rejection mediction , this caused her type 2 Diabetes. She also has oesteoporosis.
She has had numerous surgeries for different reasons.
Jess has a guide dog Dane to help her mobility and she lives independently. She would love to continue doing that for as long as possible. Upkeep of Dane, her own large amount of medications, continuesly travelling to hospital for treatments, mostly by taxi, upgrade of computer and personal aides etc is taking its toll on her.
