Thank you so very much for taking the time to read my story. I am 22 and was diagnosed with keratoconus when I was 15. Keratoconus is a degenerative disorder of the eye in which structural changes within the cornea cause it to thin and change to a more conical shape than its normal, gradual curve. My Dr.( told me that it was very mild and he would keep an eye on it. He did not seem too worried at the time. The next time I saw him he was very worried how quickly it had progressed . Though my right eye was still 'ok' My left eye had severe scaring and my eye sight was a lot worse. The Dr. said I was legally blind. My vision was 20/500. In other words what you can see 500 ft. away, I could only see it if I were 20 ft. away. I tried hard contacts as advised by the Dr. but it was no use. They could not get a good enough fitting due to the cone shape of my eye . Glasses did not work either .After exhausting all my options he decided surgery was the only thing left to do so he referred me to an ophthalmologist. After several eye exams and such we decided a corneal transplant was the best thing for me . I was put on the waiting list for a Donner. A year passed and I was finally called in . After the surgery on my left eye was complete my eyesight was improved to 20/300. I was overwhelmed by all the detail I could suddenly see. The grass the leaves on the trees the texture of many things that I never knew before. A glimpse of what was to come. I am still blind . Though the surgery improved my left eye my right eye is now very bad . I was dropped by my insurance because I was able to get a job after my left eye had healed. I work part time at a warehouse called clear bags ,packaging and labeling product. It can be difficult at times because my eyes are constantly straining to see. I guess you could say that I have learned to recognize outlines . I can not see detail unless it is right up against my face . Even then it is hard. There isn't a day goes by that I do not have headaches . Sometimes I get all caught up in the financial stress of this upcoming surgery ... But then I remember who my God is, and everything he brought me through during my first surgery with my left eye. And I know he will bring me through this. My right eye is going to have a new procedure called intacts , which Is basically surgically putting a lens into my eye . So I am grateful I do not have to wait on another Donner. There are two different procedures they have to do to secure the lens. They cost approximately $30,000. i have no insurance so anything you can give is greatly appreciated ! Thank you for your generosity .
