2021-2022 Science Fair Project for Kamren Hopkin

Hi my name is Kamren Hopkins and this year I am enrolled in the Science Fair Course at China Spring Middle School. For my project I require funding to send samples of contaminated soil to a testing facility and to get the materials for constructing the stations to grow the plants in. It would be greatly appreciated if you could donate to help further my project this year. Below I will continue my abstract for you to read and learn more about my project.

A great amount of oil is spilled onto U.S soil with an average of 1.8 great spills of 700 metric tons or more every year and thousands of other smaller spills of a barrel or less.

My goal for my experiments would be to show the effect of soil contamination on plants and what plants are best for reversing the effect on the soil.

I will run four trials a control( 0mg of oil/ 1 kg of soil), first set 2300 mg of oil/ 1 kg of soil or .1 oz of oil/ 1 kg of soil (TCEQ Maximum), second set of 1%/ 1kg of soil or 3.5 oz of oil/ 1 kg of soil (Texas RRC Standard), third set of 2%/ 1 kg of soil or 7 oz of oil/ 1 kg of soil(Texas RRC Standard x2) with three different types of wildflowers to get the most information of the effects as possible. I will then take the same soil levels of contaminated soils and plant oil removing and soil purifying plants in these souls and once they grow and develop for 30 will then take these soils and test the amount of oil left in the soil from the original amount of oil to hopefully find and effective and eco friendly solution to oil spills.
