2020 CPC in The Hill Park BBQ Ministry

Donation protected
Alright good people, hot dogs and hamburgers are ready, so come on over!

For eight (8) Wednesday evenings each summer Christ Presbyterian Church in The Hill rolls out a grill into Trowbridge Square Park in the Hill (New Haven, CT). The good people of CPC in The Hill bring dishes, fruits, salads, and some desserts. We offer a small feast to whomever happens to be in the park that evening. And for some, it will be their only meal for the day.

This is no ordinary time. We do, nonetheless, anticipate the gathering-ban will be lifted and the parks reopened by July 1st, our first of the eight (8) BBQ ministry evenings. No matter, CPC in The Hill will feed and preach to and love on our Hill neighbors this summer in someway, and we are counting on you to help make this happen.

The good people of the park come, many just to spend time with their kids, single moms giving their children some end-of-the-day energy release, neighbors hanging out, plenty of un-parented teens, and the homeless, the addicted, and even some gang members. They are all invited to join us for a short message–and they do come to hear the Word even though they know they'd still be able to eat if they waited for 5 to 10 minutes.

Last year we averaged easily 85, sometimes 90, and even up to 120 will gather. Listen. Pray. And, then, eat. And, six (6) of the eight (8) evenings it deluged (I mean poured) on us and people still came, 40, 60, 80, and more to hear the word and start the food line. We serve no matter the weather.

These eight (8) evenings are our church’s signature ministry. Yet, we need some help to cover the costs for this ministry. It is outside our regular church budget. So we fundraise specifically for the summer Park BBQ ministry. We need weekly supplies, a new grill (we burned out the last one!), some new coolers, and of course the hot dogs and hamburgers (and some other basic food items). Although our church family and friends bring home-cooked dishes and deserts (from their own tables), between incidentals, weekly supplies, propane, some equipment, some outreach items, and school supplies (we give away on the last evening) with the growing crowd who join us each Wednesday, the park ministry costs about $225 a week. Add the needed grill and the equipment, we will need for FY20’s summer Park ministry about $2,200.

It is amazing we can feed between 85 to 120 people for $2.65 to $1.87 a meal. Would you consider helping us make this happen again for our 2020 summer and for the people in the Hill?

☛ We don’t expect an extended ban on gathering and we expect the parks to open before July 1, but please be assured your kind donation will be used to feed and minister to the good people of the Hill this summer. This is our 7th year! No matter the weather . . . no matter the crisis, we know how to do this.
