2017 Hilina'i's Walk

Donation protected

Tommy Heffernan, along with family and friends will be doing a 38 mile walk/relay from Hau'ula, in the North shore of O'ahu to Diamond Head.  He's doing the walk to raise funds to send his daughter, Hilina'i to a special needs school that provides education, services and therapy to help her learn and grow.

Hilina’i was diagnosed with Hypotonia when she was one. This affected her speech, eating, core strength and walking. Later, she was diagnosed with Developmental Delays across the board, from cognitive and physical to social and emotional. Today this is referred to as Intellectual Disability. We tried the public education system but Hilinaʻi regressed and began hurting herself, largely due to her inability to communicate. Her Neurologist suggested Variety School of Hawaiʻi, where she has been ever since. We made a commitment to get her there, and Tommy has been walking 38 miles, with family and friends, from his childhood school (Hauʻula Elementary) to Variety School in Diamond Head to raise money and awareness.

Hilina'i has made great gains over the past few years at Variety School.   Her speech has improved dramatically and she has gained a confidence that allows her to take risks in education and learning.  We appreciate all the support and aloha!  All proceeds will go toward paying her tuition for the school, which is approximately $30,000 per child. Mahalo for your contribution and for making a difference in Hilina'i's life.
