Support our training of 8 students in Haiti

Tax deductible

Eight of the 200 students who participated in our six-week workshops last summer, are attending our weekend workshop at our local Partner's studio. These students were chosen based on their skillset and talent. 50% of them are girls.

100% of donations go to the Mask Making program in Haiti.

The 8 Students attending Spring Mask Making workshop
These talented students will be Didier's "teacher assistant" at the upcoming workshop in Jacmel, Haiti summer 2023. At the end of the summer workshop, these eight students will be empowered and qualified to teach other traditional mask making.
More important, through CPI's workshops, these students will graduate skilled, with a craft to earn a livelyhood as Hitian mask-makers.

We are giving a Boost to Girls
By including girls in the workshops, and in the advanced artisan group (where they’ll be 50%), girls will receive the psychological and practical resources to enter the traditionally all-male field of mask-making. By choosing girls and boys to become teachers, our partner, renowned mask-maker Didier Civil, is helping to level the playing field.

We are Training Teachers:
A new generation of mask-making teachers will be on its way. They will augment existing workshops as well as create new ones.

Summary of the Phase 2 program:
  • 20 children (50% girls)
  • Two days a week over a six-month period
  • Field trips, artist visits
  • An exhibit of the masks following the workshop
  • The children will join a community of esteemed artists. The program will help these kids see themselves as artists

Our Program Emphasize The Importance of Masks in Haitian Culture:
While Haiti is always cited when the conversation turns to poverty and social unrest, our program draws the world’s attention to Haiti’s deep cultural traditions. It helps integrate Haiti into the international cultural conversation – where it belongs.

Why our Program Matters:
Children in Haiti are chronically disadvantaged. Their ability to attend school – and enhance their chances of success – is hampered by poverty, recurrent natural disasters, and most recently by cholera and civil unrest. So, while this project started with a focus on the traditional art of mask-making, it will lift kids’ spirits and (in the longer term) provide new potential career opportunities. The program emphatically includes an equal number of girls.

The Outcome:
  • The kids will also learn and continue to develop softer skills, like how to:
  • Concentrate and follow instructions
  • Be patient and accept criticism
  • Share resources and cooperate
  • Evaluate the quality of their work by comparing it to other, outstanding examples

So, while this project focuses on mask-making, it will have a much broader impact on kids, the culture, and the economy.

With your support, 20 Haitian children will be getting a clubhouse, as well as a solid foundation for a career in the arts.

Thank you for your support!
