2 worthy causes in Nepal

Hi, my name is Roberta Wintrup and I have been involved with humanitarian work in Nepal since 2007. I am a Registered Nurse by trade and have been to Nepal 4 times, either teaching or volunteering in some capacity. For the past 17 years, I have been raising money to pay some college tuition for students from poor, rural villages. Most of the students so far have studied in the health care field and have returned to work in their small communities.

I do a number of different activities to raise funds. I once held a dance that raised over $4000. I regularly buy and sell items on Facebook Marketplace for a profit. I return empties. I ask for donations rather than birthday presents or Christmas gifts. But mostly I have been blessed with kindness and generosity from friends and family who have willingly contributed to my fundraising efforts over the years.

This year I am raising money for 2 worthy causes:

The first is to help pay tuition for a young lady (17 y.o.) who I met while I was in Nepal in September 2022. She is very bright, very hardworking and studious, but has no family to support her. She is in her first year of business college to gain some marketable skills and then plans to pursue higher education (hopefully in the health care field!).

The second is to purchase medical equipment for the clinic in Mukli, a small village south of the Everest Region of Nepal. It does not receive any of the Sir Edmund Hilary endowment funds that the higher up Everest Region receives. So far I have been able to send funds to pay for a small amount of tuition and to purchase oxygen tanks and regulators for the clinic. I have also set up donation sites in Nepal for hikers to donate their hiking poles, and 27 of these have so far made their way to Mukli to aid mobility for seniors.
