My three year old son was recently diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder along with Global Developmental Delays. When he was born at 30 weeks gestation, we were told that there was a possibility he could face delays in the future but they didn't know for sure. At the around 18 months we began to notice that he no longer did a few of the things he used to do like sip through a straw or eat with a spoon and we also noticed his language was not developing accordingly for a kid his age. We immediately got him involved in therapies through Early Intervention and he is currently in school where he receives therapies and special education. While these therapies are certainly useful, my son still needs a unique approach to his therapies which we are not receiving. I am looking to raise funds to attend a 5 day workshop in Massachusetts at the Autism Treatment Center of America, where I will receive a special training to work on alternative therapeutic approaches for Autism. We have tried various things with our son and for some reason he has not responded to them. We still struggle with finding ways to communicate with him and we hope this training will hold the key to his development or at least provide us with more therapy alternatives. Once I return from the training, I plan on sharing my knowledge with other parents in the area who might feel the same frustration with the traditional therapies through workshops and lectures. The funds collected will be used to pay for the 5 day training and flights there.
