In December, Erin and I added a second companion to our family in the form of Wesley, a 5 year old rescue who is from a no kill shelter in Iowa and was originally a rescue out of the Miami Dade county animal services in Florida. We purchased Wesley because of his temperament and his overall ability to be a companion with Buttercup, our 1.5 year old golden retriever.
This past Thursday, Wesley began throwing up blood and was taken to the vet for examination. After several tests, he has been diagnosed with what is known as a transmissive venereal tumor, which is a cancerous mass that is pretty contagious. This a rather rare circumstance up north and it is HIGHLY likely he contracted the disease before he came up to Iowa, as it is much more prevalent in warm climates.
We have been considering what to do, including putting him to sleep if necessary, but have decided, along with the support of the Jackson County Shelter in Iowa, to try to save him. The survival rate is 90-95% if he receive 4-6 doses of vincristine, a form of chemotherapy.
We are asking for you to consider if you would give even 10.00 to help our family cover the costs that would come with this treatment. You may not be able to, and that is perfectly fine, but if you can, even in a small way, it would go a long way toward helping Wesley live a healthy life and we could fulfill what we believe to be an oath to save this dog, who almost certainly would have been put down in Florida had they found this earlier. In a way, it's a little miracle and now we want to try to give him a happy and long life.
Thanks for considering.
