We started out in Rockaway Beach one year ago. Rockapup was one of the few stores to make it through Hurricane Sandy. Our goal is to provide people in Rockaway pet products & help them take care of their pets through free training and nutritional advice and community events. We partnered with the ASPCA & other rescue groups to hold dog and cat adoptions.
When Hurricane Sandy hit, Rockapup was shut down for nearly a month. BUT we were able to open on a generator -- still in the dark and working with flashlights and a flooded basement. Instead of selling food, we worked with the ASPCA to give away thousands of pounds of free donated food and provide emergency vet care and wellness clinics to people who had few other options for their cats and dogs. At Rockapup, the ASPCA gave free first aid treatment, vaccinations and micro-chipping.
Now, we're back up. But it's rough going in a community still reeling from the hurricane, because 40% of the residents haven't returned home. While many of our fellow merchants' landlords have been understanding, ours is threatening to evict us if we cannot pay the rent immediately.
When we were giving out food, our first concern wasn't about making money, it was about helping our neighbors. Your contribution will help us pay rent and help us stay open through the winter months. Local businesses are what make the Rockaways great. Help us stay open, so that we can help Rockaway recover and continue to serve the people here.
PS - We, of course, are not asking Rockaway residents to contribute. But if you do live here, be sure to stop by and let us what you need and we'll do our best to get it in stock for you. #RebuildRockaway <3
